The tread on the outsole still has pattern left, so the shoes are fine. That is the rule almost everyone uses, and it is the reason so many players are still on court in shoes that stopped doing their job a month ago.
Tread wear is real, but on a court shoe it is usually the last signal to arrive. The two things that fail first are invisible from underneath.
What actually wears out, and usually in what order
The midsole compresses. The foam that absorbs your landing loses its ability to spring back. This happens gradually enough that you do not notice it as a change in the shoe; you notice it as your feet and knees being sorer after a session than they used to be, and you blame the surface or your age. Indoors this is usually the first thing to go, and it is always the hardest to see.
The upper softens. Every hard push to the sideline stretches the material that holds your foot on the platform. After enough of them, the upper gives a little earlier and a little further, and your foot starts sliding toward the edge on lateral pushes even with the laces cinched. This is the one to take seriously, because a foot sliding off the platform loads the ankle at an angle you did not choose, and it feels like being a step slow rather than like a broken shoe. Then the outsole wears. Usually on the lateral edge of the forefoot and under the pivot foot first, because that is where a pickleball player actually loads a shoe. On a gym floor this is reliably the last of the three, so by the time you can see it the other two have been degrading for weeks. Outdoor concrete is the exception worth knowing: it is abrasive enough that the tread can go first, and when it does the shoe is finished regardless of how the foam feels, because a smooth outsole slips on stops.
The four checks
Three things fail, and it takes four checks to catch them, because the outsole needs its own look. The first three take about a minute in your hands. The fourth needs one session on court, because a softened upper only shows itself under load.
The tread look. Turn the shoe over. If the herringbone has gone smooth at the forefoot pivot or along the lateral edge, you are finished and nothing below matters. Any one of the four checks is enough to retire a pair on its own; this is just the one that takes five seconds and needs neither a reference pair nor a session of play, which is why it goes first. Outdoors it is also the one most likely to fire first.
The thumb press. Push your thumb hard into the midsole foam along the outside edge, near the ball of the foot. New foam resists and rebounds. Worn foam gives easily and stays dented for a beat. This check only works against a new pair of the same model, because foam compounds differ enough between models that a healthy soft midsole can feel deader than a firm new one from another brand, and that gap can be large. Against a different model the result is inconclusive whatever it feels like, so use the other checks instead.
The table lean. Put both shoes on a flat surface and crouch to look at them from behind, at eye level. A shoe whose midsole has collapsed on one side leans, usually outward. A leaning shoe is tilting your ankle on every single step, all session.
The slide check. Play one session paying attention to one thing: on a hard push to the sideline, does your foot move inside the shoe? Not the shoe on the court, your foot in the shoe. If it does and the laces are tight, the upper is done.

Hours, not months
The useful number depends almost entirely on what you play on, because outdoor concrete is far more abrasive than a gym floor.

Modular sport tile sits between the two and depends on where it is laid. Indoors over a gym floor it behaves closer to the wood figures; outdoors over concrete, exposed to grit and sun, it wears much more like the top row. Abrasiveness is what the number actually tracks, not whether there is a roof.
Those are wide ranges because bodyweight and movement style move them. A heavier player, or one who stops hard rather than glides into position, compresses foam and scrubs rubber faster than the hours alone predict. Treat the number as a reminder to run the four checks, not as a verdict on its own.
Calendar age counts for something on its own, though less predictably than the internet suggests. Foam does stiffen in storage, but how fast depends on the compound and the conditions: a supercritical or nitrogen-infused midsole in a warm garage gives up rebound faster than a plain EVA one in a cool closet. So treat an old unworn pair as worth checking rather than worth discarding. If you can get your hands on a fresh pair of the same model, the thumb press settles it quickly. If you cannot, the press tells you little, and neither do the other checks: the table lean only finds a collapse to one side and the slide check only tests the upper, so nothing in this list reads a midsole that stiffened evenly on a shelf. Play a session in them and judge it the way the midsole announces itself anyway, which is whether your feet and knees are sorer afterward than the pair you have been wearing.
The practical move is to write the date inside the tongue with a marker when you buy them, and to note roughly how many sessions a week you play. That turns “these still look okay” into a number you can act on.
Rotating two pairs
If you play more than three times a week, two pairs alternated are worth considering, though be clear about what you are buying. Each pair obviously lasts longer on the calendar, since each is taking half the sessions. Whether the foam resting between sessions adds up to more total court hours across the two pairs is not something we can put a number on, so do not buy the second pair expecting it to pay for itself.
What rotation can give you is a built-in comparison, but only if you buy two pairs of the same model. Then, when the older pair suddenly feels noticeably worse than the newer one, that is the thumb press telling you something without you having to remember what new felt like, and it is exactly the same-model reference the check wants. Rotate two different models and the comparison is inconclusive for the same reason it is inconclusive against any other brand: the foams are not alike to begin with.
Test it
Turn the pair you are wearing right now over and look at the tread first, because that one is instant: if the herringbone has gone smooth at the forefoot or the lateral edge, you are done and the rest of the checks do not matter.
